Querying Google for “Hanukkah” will also reveal another holiday-themed surprise.

Google is no stranger to whimsy. The company has changed its logo over 1,000 times to honor special events such as artists’ birthdays and lunar eclipses. Now, fans of these Google Doodles can even get them printed on t-shirts, skateboards and other items at the brand-new Doodle Store.

NASA’s planet-hunting Kepler spacecraft has confirmed the discovery of its first alien world in its host star’s habitable zone — that just-right range of distances that could allow liquid water to exist, and found more than 1,000 new explanet candidates, researchers announced today (Dec. 5).

The new finds bring the Kepler space telescope’s total haul to 2,326 potential planets in its first 16 months of operation. The potentially habitable alien world, a first for Kepler, orbits a star very much like our own sun. The discovery brings scientists one step closer to finding a planet like our own — one which could conceivably harbor life, scientists said.

The newfound planet in the habitable zone is called Kepler-22b. It is located about 600 light-years away, orbiting a sun-like star.

Kepler-22b’s radius is 2.4 times that of Earth, and the two planets have roughly similar temperatures. If the greenhouse effect operates there similarly to how it does on Earth, the average surface temperature on Kepler-22b would be 72 degrees Fahrenheit (22 degrees Celsius).

“We’re getting closer and closer to discovering the so-called ‘Goldilocks planet,’” Pete Worden, director of NASA’s Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., said during a press conference.

Here are items that are even cheaper before or after the holidays. You’re better off making some purchases at other times of the year.

Cameras

The biggest electronic trade shows of the year happen in January and February, when new models are revealed. By late February, older models are being sold at discounts of 30% or more.

Televisions

Retailers will start lowering prices on last year’s models before new models start hitting the stores in March. The best deals follow the Super Bowl in early February. You could save a few hundred dollars.

Furniture

New furniture inventory hits showrooms in February, so look to save 10% to 50% if you buy in January, as retailers push to clear the showroom. Old models tend to be just as good, using the exact same frames as the new.

Cars

Car dealers want to clear their inventory before the end of the year. TrueCar, which collects automobile data, estimates prices on all vehicles nationwide will average 9.3% below sticker price on December 31, the steepest discount of the month.

Looking for a used car? Hold off until April for the best deals because it’s the month that dealers tend to buy the most at auction, giving you the best selection.

Cruises

For those who want to hit the seas, though, booking a cruise is best after the holidays. Wait until “wave season,” which is January to March, to book a summer cruise, says Jaime Freedman, of TravelZoo. You’ll be met with an onslaught of deals as cruise lines compete with one another for customers. Rising airfare prices have made cruises increasingly enticing with their all-inclusive pricing, says Freedman.

Bicycles

As the riding season winds down for most people, you may think that bicycles are ripe for discounts. And you’re right, if you just wait a little longer, until after the holiday season. After the holiday rush, discounts are steep on older models. Shops are also more likely to throw in a few extra free accessories because they are looking for business during the slow winter months. Better yet, fewer customers means you’ll get more personal service.

Outerwear

February and March are the ideal months to pick up winter outerwear, such as coats, hats and gloves. Retailers realize that most people have already bought their winter clothing by then, so you can take advantage of discounting to fill your closet for winters ahead.

Skis

Skis during the holiday season may seem like the perfect match for that first winter snowstorm. But the best deals can be had in March and April as the ski season winds down, says Stephen Regenold, editor of GearJunkie.com.

Snow Blowers

The Winter Solstice is the worst time to buy a snow blower. In cold, wet climates, March is the month for purchasing this big-ticket item. You might really appreciate a back-saving snow blower before winter’s heaviest storms arrive, but you’ll appreciate even more the 30% to 40% savings you’ll find as winter ends.

Tools

The holidays aren’t the best time to score deals on new tools. Consider giving tools as a gift for Father’s Day in June, when prices will fall by 25%, instead of Christmas.

Now Microsoft launching a full-scale attack on your other entertainment devices. Starting Monday, Xbox 360 owners are being prompted to download a free new user interface for the console, which expands Kinect voice control, introduces a broad entertainment search option and adds a slew of new content options that have nothing to do with gaming.

With this update, however, roughly 40 TV and entertainment providers will offer an assortment of movies, music and television choices on the console, greatly expanding the system’s capabilities. Hulu Plus, premium cable movie channel Epix and MSNBC’s The Today Show are part of the launch lineup in the U.S., with content from Youtube and Dailymotion coming later this month. A dedicated UFC channel will also be live before the end of the year.

Not all of the new content is free, however. You’ll need to be an Xbox Live Gold member ($60 annual fee) to sift through on-demand services, and many of the new channels will only work if you’re already a subscriber.

The console update further includes new voice search controls for users who own the Kinect camera. The update is not without a minor setback, however. While a few heavy hitters are already on board, two of the biggest U.S. partners — Comcast and Verizon’s FiOS service — are absent at launch. Verizon subscribers won’t be able to use their Xbox as a limited set top box until later this month, while Comcast’s Xfinity service (which plans to offer on-demand content, but not live TV) won’t be available until an undetermined date early next year.

More than 57 million people worldwide own an Xbox 360, which makes this update a notable one in the entertainment world. It’s not quite the cable-killer some have positioned it as — you’ll still need a cable subscription to access most of the channels — but it could impact sales of standalone set-top boxes like Roku, Boxee and Google TV.

Microsoft Corp previewed the upcoming version of its new Windows operation system, internally code-named Windows 8 that focuses on optimization for touchscreen hardware, including tablet PCs. The company was introducing the next version of Windows to hardware partners at Computex 2011.

Microsoft is also working to integrate the Internet telephone service Skype into the new operating system after it agreed to buy it for $8.5 billion in cash early last month.

Windows 8 also claim that the new version of the operation system will help partners build devices that take advantage of the new user experience that provide a natural reflection of the device.

While providing a technical preview, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President of Windows Planning, Hardware and PC Ecosystem, Mike Angiulo highlighted on the ability of the new operating system to work across both x86 and ARM-based architectures, including shown to run on a variety of early prototypes.

“Our aim with ‘Windows 8′ is to make the user experience a natural extension of the device, from the time you turn on your PC through how you interact with the applications you know and love.

Apart from the compatibility, the Windows 8 start menu or desktop appearance has been significantly changed to look more like its Windows Phone 7 operating system. The users will log into Windows 8 by just a swipe up from the bottom of the screen, and then applications can be launched from a series of tiled icons like on the latest touch screen phones.

Steven Sinofsky, the president of the Windows and Windows Live Division at the company says won’t spill the beans on when the new Windows is coming but it won’t be as early as this fall. “Right now we’re focusing on getting a release done,”.

Microsoft is planning to reveal more at his developer’s conference in the fall.
